Upon arrival in Paro, you’ll clear customs and immigration before being greeted by your Bhutan group leader. After settling into your hotel, your guide will brief you on your upcoming adventures. Take this opportunity to explore the vibrant Paro bazaar, immersing yourself in local culture.
Today’s highlight is a hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. The two to three-hour ascent not only serves as a fantastic acclimatization but also offers breathtaking views. Afterward, visit Paro Dzong, a monastic and administrative center, and the Ta Dzong, which now houses the National Museum of Bhutan. Here, you can explore exhibits showcasing the country’s rich cultural history.
Following breakfast, you’ll embark on your trek along a well-defined trail, passing through Tibetan refugee settlements. Ascend through a forest of blue pine and silver birch to Jilli La (3580m), where you’ll enjoy magnificent views back down the Paro Valley before camping at a beautiful site (3490m).
Continue your trek through conifer and rhododendron forests, with the chance to glimpse the snow-capped Jomolhari peak. You’ll pass by yak herder settlements before reaching your campsite at Jangchu Lakha (3780m), set in a stunning valley.
Another spectacular day awaits as you trek along an alpine ridge, crossing several small passes around 4050m, each marked by stone memorials and prayer flags. Enjoy a leisurely lunch before descending to your campsite on the shores of Jimilang Tsho, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
From Jimilang Tsho, ascend through rhododendron forests and grazing meadows, reaching Janye Tsho (3950m), a peaceful spot for a break. Afterward, you’ll continue to your campsite above Simkota Tsho (4050m), where you can appreciate the view of Jilli Dzong from earlier in the trek.
Take a short acclimatization walk to Dungtsho Lake, known for its serene beauty and Buddhist significance. The lake is said to house conches in its depths, and you’ll also explore remnants of a meditation house from a wandering Buddhist master. Return to camp for a restful afternoon.
On your final day of trekking, cross several small passes towards the Thimphu Valley. You’ll encounter yak herder settlements and alpine lakes before reaching Phume La (4200m), where you can enjoy sweeping views of the valley below. Camp near Phajoding Goemba (3650m), a significant Buddhist monastery.
Descend from Phajoding through mixed forest, reaching the Youth Centre (2580m), followed by a drive to your hotel in Thimphu. After lunch, explore the capital, visiting the Tashichho Dzong, the main government building, and the impressive Stupa dedicated to the late King. Don’t miss the local handicraft emporium, showcasing traditional Bhutanese crafts.
After a morning of sightseeing in Thimphu, drive back to Paro. If your trip coincides with the Paro festival in March, you’ll have the afternoon to enjoy the vibrant celebrations, including local dances and rituals.
On your final day, enjoy breakfast before transferring to Paro Airport for your onward flight, taking with you unforgettable memories of Bhutan’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage.
