As your flight approaches Bhutan, enjoy spectacular views of the majestic Himalayas, including the sacred peaks of Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by a representative and transferred to your hotel. Your cultural immersion begins with visits to Rinpung Dzong, built in 1646, which now houses the district monastic body and administrative offices, and Kichu Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Bhutan. You’ll also visit Drugyal Dzong, built to commemorate Bhutan’s victory over Tibetan invaders.
After breakfast, embark on a 4-5 hour hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, perched at 3,180 meters. This iconic monastery is where Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated. The trail is steep but rewarding, and lunch will be enjoyed at the Cafeteria Restaurant halfway up. After exploring the monastery, you’ll hike back down to the valley floor and return to Paro for an overnight stay.
Today, you’ll start your trek with a drive from your hotel to the trailhead. After about an hour of hiking, reach Jele Dzong, which sits at an altitude of 3,480 meters. The trail gently ascends through lush forests, and the dzong offers panoramic views of the Paro Valley with snow-capped mountains in the backdrop. Spend the night camping at this historic site, which dates back to the 15th century.
Today, trek for approximately two hours, beginning with a gradual ascent before descending slightly. The trail weaves through thick alpine and rhododendron forests, leading you to Jangchulakha, where you will set up camp at an altitude of 3,600 meters. This campsite offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and the opportunity to spot yak herders in the area.
Your trekking adventure continues as you descend for about 230 meters before ascending 330 meters to reach Jimilangtsho. The trail leads you along a ridge with stunning views of nearby mountains and valleys. Your campsite is located beside the picturesque Jimilangtsho lakes, famous for their giant trout. You’ll also enjoy magnificent views of Jichu Drake (6,989 m) and Gangkar Puensum (7,497 m), Bhutan’s highest peak.
Today’s trek begins with a climb from the lower end of the lake, leading you to a summit at 4,050 meters. The path descends to a single stone shelter before again climbing. You may encounter yak herders along the way, providing insight into their traditional lifestyle. Camp for the night near Simkota Lake at an altitude of 4,110 meters, where you can enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
Begin your descent with a gradual climb that rewards you with magnificent views of Mt. Gangkar Puensum and other peaks. The trail then descends through forests of blue pine to a community hall near Phajoding. From Phajoding, you’ll trek downhill to Thimphu, where you will check into your hotel for the night.
Enjoy a scenic drive to Punakha, with a tea stop at Dochu La Pass (3,100 meters), which offers stunning views of the Himalayas on clear days. After descending through rhododendron and fir forests, reach Punakha. After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong, the second oldest and largest dzong in Bhutan, and spend the night in this historic town.
On your return to Paro, stop at Metshina Village for a 20-minute walk to Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kuenley. Continue your drive, crossing Dochu La Pass again to visit Druk Wangyal Monastery, known for its elaborate paintings depicting the lineage of the present monarchy. After a lunch stop in Thimphu, arrive in Paro by evening.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the stunning kingdom of Bhutan and its warm-hearted people. Your representative will transfer you to the airport for your departure, with Druk Air flights typically scheduled in the early morning to avoid adverse weather conditions.
