ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Thimphu

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by the cool, clean air of Bhutan. In clear weather, the flight offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas, giving way to the lush Paro valley. After customs and visa control, you will be transferred to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, in a private vehicle. Time permitting, take a guided walk around the town before meeting your local guide for a welcome and orientation session.

Day 2: Meet a Monk and Drive to Punakha

Begin your day by meeting a Buddhist monk and scholar to learn about Bhutan’s Buddhist beliefs and practices. Afterward, enjoy a scenic drive to Punakha, crossing the stunning Dochu La pass, which offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. After lunch, hike to the 15th-century Chimi Lhakhang Monastery, dedicated to Drukpa Kunley, the “Divine Madman,” known for his eccentric life and fertility blessings.

Day 3: Explore Punakha

Spend the day exploring the historic and cultural sites of Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan. Visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, a fortress located at the confluence of two rivers. Afterward, visit the Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery, a Buddhist training center for nuns, and take a drive to the Wangdue Phodrang town to explore its dzong. In the afternoon, hike through rice terraces and pine forests to the picturesque Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten.

Day 4: Travel to Gangtey Valley

Travel to the Gangtey Valley (Phobjikha Valley), known for being the winter habitat of the endangered black-necked cranes. If visiting between October and February, you’ll stop at the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) to learn more about the cranes. The drive takes you through scenic forests and landscapes, offering insight into Bhutan’s natural beauty.

Day 5: Gangtey Goempa and Khewa Valley

Start your day by visiting the historic Gangtey Goempa Monastery, a 17th-century Nyingma temple that has undergone beautiful renovations. Later, enjoy a hike across Phobjikha Valley to Khewa Valley, where you’ll visit an ancient temple. End the day by visiting a local family farmhouse in Khewa for a traditional Bhutanese cooking demonstration and dinner.

Day 6: Return to Thimphu

Travel back to Thimphu and visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, a towering golden statue that overlooks the capital. Continue to the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where you’ll observe students practicing traditional Bhutanese arts like painting and woodwork. End the day with a lecture on Bhutan’s unique Gross National Happiness index.

Day 7: Journey to Haa Valley

Start the day by visiting Thimphu’s National Memorial Chorten, a major spiritual landmark. Then drive towards the remote Haa Valley, passing the Chele La pass, one of the highest motorable roads in Bhutan. Stop in Haa town, where you’ll visit the “black temple” and the “white temple,” both ancient Buddhist shrines with deep cultural significance.

Day 8: Hike to Kila Nunnery and Return to Paro

Embark on a hike to the Kila Goempa nunnery, which clings dramatically to a rocky cliff. Afterward, return to Paro and visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples. In the afternoon, visit a local archery ground to watch Bhutanese locals practicing their national sport.

Day 9: Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) Hike

Today is the highlight of your trip: a hike to the iconic Taktsang Lhakhang, also known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery, which clings to a cliff 2,000 feet above Paro Valley. This challenging trek offers stunning views of the valley below. Later, visit the ruins of Drukgyal Dzong, a fortress that once defended the Paro Valley from Tibetan invasions.

Day 10: Departure

On the final day, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your flight home. Reflect on the unique cultural and natural experiences you’ve had as you depart Bhutan.
