Today, embark on a full day of sightseeing in Thimphu Valley. Start with a visit to the National Library, home to a vast collection of ancient Buddhist texts and prayer flags. Then, explore the Thimphu Painting School, renowned for traditional thangka paintings. Continue to Kuensel Phodrang, also known as Buddha Point, to see the largest Buddha statue in Bhutan, offering magnificent views of the city. Next, visit the Memorial Chorten, a beautiful stupa honoring Bhutan’s third King, followed by a tour of the Trashichhodzong, a grand monastery that houses the government’s offices and the king’s secretariat. Don’t miss the chance to browse local handicrafts at the Handicrafts Emporium before returning to your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Today, you will transfer to Punakha, the old winter capital of Bhutan. En route, stop at the breathtaking Dochula Pass (3,048m) to enjoy panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest peak, Gangkar Punsum. As you descend into the lush Punakha Valley, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, known for its fascinating legends. Afterward, cross rice fields to the small settlement of Pana to see a tranquil temple with fewer monks and beautiful slate carvings. In the afternoon, explore Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness,” situated at the confluence of the Phochu and Mochu rivers. This architectural masterpiece, built in 1637, serves as the winter residence of the Chief Abbot and is a testament to Bhutanese craftsmanship.
Today, embark on a hike to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning temple situated atop a hill that offers breathtaking views of the valley, rice paddies, and the Mo Chu River. After a delicious lunch, visit the picturesque villages of Talo or Nobgang, known as the ancestral homes of the Queen Mothers of Bhutan. Experience the charming local culture as you explore these quaint villages. Next, head to the Sangchen Dorji Lhendrup Nunnery, perched on a ridge with spectacular views and housing a 14-foot bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara, handcrafted by local artisans. After breakfast, travel back to Paro via the scenic Dochula Pass, enjoying more breathtaking views of the Himalayan range. Once in Paro, embark on a sightseeing tour of the Paro Valley. Next, explore Dungtse Lhakang, a three-story chorten-style temple constructed in 1433, and the sacred Kichu Lhakang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, dating back to the 7th century.
Prepare for an unforgettable experience as you hike to Taktshang Pelphung Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest, perched on a sheer cliff 900 meters above the Paro Valley. For the adventurous, continue to the high observation point at 3,140 meters for incredible vistas of the monastery. After a leisurely breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to Bhutan. An onward transfer will take you to Paro Airport for your international flight, leaving you with unforgettable memories of the enchanting Kingdom of Bhutan.
