Upon arrival in Sri Lanka, the journey begins with a 2.5-hour drive to Ahangama on the south coast. As you approach Galle, you’ll pass through coastal coconut groves and be greeted by stunning ocean views. The first evening is spent enjoying dinner and settling into your accommodation at Insight Resort (or similar).
Early in the morning, we depart for the harbour and board a private, chartered boat for a whale-watching adventure. Guided by experts, we set sail into the Indian Ocean, where blue whales, sperm whales, dolphins, and other marine life thrive. After this exciting morning, we return to Ahangama for a guided visit to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built by the Dutch in 1663, Galle Fort is a beautifully preserved historic site filled with cafes, boutique shops, and colonial architecture.
After breakfast, we journey to Sinharaja Rainforest, one of Sri Lanka’s last remaining virgin rainforests. The rainforest is a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endemic species. On our guided walk through the forest, you’ll discover diverse wildlife including purple-faced langurs, sambar deer, wild boars, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
Awake to the sounds of the forest and set off on another day of exploration. Sinharaja Rainforest spans over 27,643 acres and is home to 43% of Sri Lanka’s species. Our naturalist guide will lead us through the rich wildlife trails where you’ll experience the incredible biodiversity up close.
Today, we travel inland to Udawalawe National Park, famous for its large elephant population. With over 600 elephants, Udawalawe offers some of the best wildlife watching in Sri Lanka. This afternoon, we embark on a game drive to see elephants and other wildlife such as sambar deer, spotted deer, water buffalo, and wild boar. The park’s scenic backdrop is the Udawalawe Reservoir, adding to the experience.
Our morning begins with a second game drive in Udawalawe National Park. With the help of expert naturalists, we’ll continue our exploration of this diverse wildlife haven. Later, we visit the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephants are cared for until they are old enough to return to the wild. The visit coincides with feeding time, offering a rare opportunity to observe these young elephants up close.
Before breakfast, we head out for a walk to a nearby village. The morning walk offers a chance to spot wildlife such as ibis, kingfishers, eagles, and mongoose while observing local life. After breakfast at a local farm, we return to the hotel and depart for Tissamaharama and Yala National Park. On arrival, we embark on our first afternoon game drive in Yala, one of the best places in the world to spot leopards. The park’s diverse habitat is home to elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, and over 215 species of birds.
This morning, we head out for a final game drive in Yala before returning to the hotel for lunch. Afterwards, we travel to Dickwella, a picturesque beach along Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
